The Desmond Egan papers. Part I, 1966-1985 (bulk 1969-1985).

Part I of the Desmond Egan papers consists largely of the manuscripts and typescripts of the author's poetry published in the collections Midland (1972), Leaves (1974), Siege! (1977), Woodcutter (1978), Athlone? (1980), Seeing double (1983), and Snapdragon (1983); of his earliest finished verse; and of poems contributed to various periodicals. Also included are a photocopy of the poet's M.A. thesis (University College, Dublin, 1966) entitled Attitudes to Catholicism in the modern Irish novel; issues 1-6 of the periodical Era, edited by Egan; posters and calendars containing poems by the author; a small group of photographs; and two signed typescripts (a poem and a prose note) by Robert Farren. Completing the collection are four audio cassette tapes which include selected poems read by Desmond Egan; two interviews from Radio Telefís Éireann; a talk with Samuel Beckett; and a 1972 performance of Journey, a concert piece with words by Desmond Egan and music by Eamonn O Gallchobhair.

The eminent Irish poet Desmond Egan was born July 15, 1936, in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland.to Thomas and Kathleen (Garland) Egan. He received a B.A. degree from Maynooth University and an M.A. from University College, Dublin.
